What is Smarter Balanced?

Smarter Balanced is a state-led consortium working collaboratively to develop next-generation assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that accurately measure student progress toward college and career readiness. The Consortium involves educators, researchers, policymakers, and community groups in a transparent and consensus-driven process to help all students thrive in a knowledge-driven global economy.

The California Department of Education has determined that the CST for English language arts and math will not be given any longer. However, 5th grade students will still be required to take the Physical Fitness Test in February and the Science CST in May.

This spring, Montebello Unified School District will be administering the new Smarter Balanced State Assessment (SBAC). This test will be administered on computers to students in grades 3-11. The State Test will no longer be administered to second grade students.
